Fear

Day 9

Sara Caine opened her eyes and grimaced when she saw the look of concern on Johan Luken’s face. She swiped the hair off her forehead with a gloved hand and got up from the chair.

“No more, Johan,” she said and turned away from his accusing eyes. “I don’t want to go there, and I don’t want to hear them anymore.” She waited for him to say something, but he stayed silent.

She had been staying with him since being released from the hospital and felt grateful for all he had done for her. The last thing she wanted to do was go back to her apartment. It was the place the Jerry Killer kidnapped her and she would never feel safe there again. He had taken away her home, and she knew she now had to move.

Every time she listed all the things she needed to do to move, she became paralyzed and nothing got done. Even dealing with Johan’s pushiness to get her back on her feet talking to ghosts was more manageable than finding an affordable apartment in Los Angeles. Who was she kidding? She loved staying with the man she had had a crush on since she was sixteen. Putting all that aside though, Sara knew she wouldn’t be able to live in her former loft and she couldn’t sleep on his couch indefinitely. She would need to find a new home. And a new career if her anxiety about talking to ghosts was any indication of the future.

To be frank, she didn’t want to be herself anymore. Her stay in limbo had terrified her. She wanted nothing to do with that world. Now that she had experienced where the poor lost souls of the dead went, this new understanding scared the bejesus out of her more than the ghosts ever did.

“Sara,” he said, breaking through her thoughts. “I know you are scared. I can see it plainly on your face. We can take it slower.” He took stock of how his words were effecting her before he plunged on. “Maybe I have been rushing you. I don’t want to hear you crying out in the night anymore,” he said.

Her heart dropped. She didn’t want him to know about the nightmares, but her cries had exposed her. She hadn’t told him that every night, when her eyes closed, she was back in limbo and unable to get out again. Every gray wall she encountered in the dream made her whimper and the ever-extending hallways brought despair more profound than any she had experienced. And Johan knew. She couldn’t explain why, but that made her feel so ashamed. She wasn’t as strong as he thought she was, and he would discover at any moment. “I don’t want to take this slow. I don’t want to do this at all.”

“That’s fine then. Why don’t we go get lunch? We can start back tomorrow.”

His kindness made her feel guilty she didn’t tell him about the man in limbo. The man named Anderson told her that Detective Eva Murphy was in danger and she needed their help.
